Under Master Settings -> Core Settings -> System -> Variants, you will find four settings that allow you to adapt the behaviour of variants:

Since version 4.2.0 you can create multidimensional variants. Multidimensional variants are needed if a product has several different versions, e.g. if clothes are available in different sizes and different colors. Using multidimensional variants you can create a variant for each combination.

Variants allow you to set up different product options for which you can specify nearly all settings. Variants are saved as separate products. Accordingly, you can adapt variants like standard products. You can enter a stock inventory for each variant, upload various images, modify the description text, etc.
